Asphalt Shingle Roofing in New Jersey: What's Included
Asphalt shingle roofing in New Jersey covers most of the houses we work on, from Cape Cods to two-storey colonials. A shingle roof is a system, and every part of it is on the estimate:
- Tear-off down to the deck, with damaged boards replaced
- Ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys and around penetrations
- Synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck
- Drip edge, starter strip and new flashing at walls, chimneys and vents
- Architectural shingles nailed to the manufacturer's pattern
- Ridge cap and ridge or roof vents matched to the attic
Choosing a Shingle Line and Colour
- Architectural shingles
- Thicker, laminated shingles with a dimensional look. They resist wind better than flat 3-tab and are what we install on most new roofs.
- 3-tab shingles
- Flat, single-layer and lighter. Mostly used now to match an older roof during a repair.
- Wind and algae resistance
- Shingle lines differ in wind rating and in algae-resistant granules, which keep north-facing slopes from streaking.
We'll show you samples and the colours that suit the house. The estimate names the exact shingle line.
How Our Asphalt Shingle Roofing Process Works
Asphalt Shingle Roofing Cost: What Drives the Price

- Layers to remove
- Two old layers cost more to tear off and dispose of than one.
- Decking
- Rotted or delaminated boards have to be replaced before shingles go on.
- Shingle line
- Premium lines cost more and usually carry longer manufacturer warranties.
- Details
- Chimneys, skylights, dormers and valleys all add flashing work.

Warranty and Materials
A shingle roof carries two warranties: the manufacturer's on the shingles, and ours on the workmanship. Both are named in the estimate, so you know what's covered before you sign. Most of this work is a full roof replacement; if only part of the roof has failed, a shingle repair matched to the existing roof may be all you need.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing in New Jersey: What Homeowners Say
Asphalt Shingle Roofing FAQs
Still have a question?
(201) 757-3945How long does an asphalt shingle roof last in New Jersey?
Commonly 20 to 30 years for architectural shingles, less for 3-tab. Poor attic ventilation, heavy tree cover and ice dams shorten it.
Architectural or 3-tab: which should I choose?
For a new roof, architectural. They are heavier, resist wind better and usually carry a longer warranty. 3-tab is mostly used to match an older roof during a repair.
Can you repair a few shingles instead of replacing the roof?
Often, yes, when the rest of the roof is sound. We match the shingle as closely as the existing roof allows and tell you honestly if a repair would only buy a little time.
Do you install over the old shingles?
We recommend a full tear-off. It lets us check and repair the decking, and a single layer lies flatter and lasts longer.
